Quality Manager – Glasgow, UK, with occasional business travel
Our client produces a range of high quality decorative plastic products for the global automotive industry. The business has grown significantly in recent years, now exporting across Europe, Asia and North America to many of the leading vehicle brands.
The Role and Remit
As the Company grows our client is looking to strengthen their UK management team with the appointment of an experienced Quality Manager. The appointed individual will build on the achievements of the current team and play a central role in leading the business through the next phase of development. The role encompasses the full spectrum of quality management responsibilities including piloting of site-wide client and industry accreditation compliance standards, and the overall management of product quality control disciplines across the entire value chain, from external supply base, engineering controls, manufacturing, logistics, through to client management of quality acceptance specifications and standards.
The position will appeal to a hands-on quality professional with effective leadership experience, a disciplined and method-based approach to problem solving. You will guide the Quality Department from its current reactive role into a proactive and preventative role, setting standards and supporting the core sales, project engineering, manufacturing and supply chain management processes across the site. The Quality Manager will monitor and advise on the performance of the quality management system, produce data and report on performance, measuring against set standards.
The Quality Manager will be involved in the following:
review and manage the company’s quality management systems and procedures, standards and specifications;
work with site-wide staff to conduct reviews of current procedures and where necessary introduce improvement recommendations;
support external body accreditation and client audits;
manage and conduct internal audit processes and oversee implementation of corrective actions;
review customer requirements and specifications and where needed negotiate documented methods and criteria of acceptance;
support purchasing and engineering organisations to ensure external supplier quality standards and procedures are clearly defined and adhered to, including where necessary site supplier audits;
compute site wide COQ (Cost of Quality) management information and drive focussed and measurable improvement initiatives to reduce waste and improve efficiency;
lead site-wide communication and awareness training in quality awareness and performance against external and internal quality targets and goals;
participate in and support the NPI (New Product Introduction) process through the provision of quality management resource;
manage the resources of the quality team to provide consistently high levels of service to associated engineering, manufacturing and purchasing departments;
as part of the site management team, establish a strategic quality roadmap for the UK operation which will deliver a competitive and sustainable quality and cost advantage for the business in the market place.
Skills and experience
A minimum of five years’ experience gained from working within a volume manufacturing environment is essential, ideally where regulation and negotiation of inspection protocols and acceptance criteria need to be defined and managed.
Experience in the automotive component supply industry and/or experience in the manufacture of high quality, highly visible components would be an advantage.
In addition to industry-specific competences, we are looking for candidates who can show evidence of the following skills:
good communication skills with an ability to connect at all levels of an organisation;
organising and planning;
numerical and statistical ability;
an aptitude for analysis;
appreciation of other work disciplines, such as engineering and science.
Ideally qualified to degree or HND level in a technical/engineering discipline.
Training in Six Sigma and associated problem solving tools and techniques would be an advantage.
Leadership and man-management skills.
